Edgar L. "Ed" VanDyke, Sr., age 84, of Sunbury, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 23, 2017 at his son's residence in Centerburg. He was born on November 1, 1932 in Richlands, Virginia to the late George W. L. and Laura E. (Stumpp) VanDyke. Ed was a graduate of Richlands High School and veteran of the United States Army, where he boxed and played football, serving during the Korean War. On October 3, 1959, he married Alice Rhea Clarke. They were married for 54 years before her passing on May 28, 2014. He worked at Timken until his retirement, he held memberships at the Sunbury VFW and Eagles. Ed loved his family, he enjoyed spending time with his son, his grandchildren and great grandchildren). He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and attending every sporting event for his grandchildren. He enjoyed watching The Ohio State Buckeyes, as well as the Cleveland Browns. He was also an excellent handyman, tinkering and fixing everything from cars to boats. He will be missed by his son, Richard (Tina) of Centerburg; grandchildren, Ashley, Shaun, Erin (Gill) Thompson, Ainee, Ethan (Katlyn), Evan, and Alyssa; great grandchildren, Bexlee and Eastyn; brother, Doug (Susie) of Hudson, Wisconsin; sister, Chris Myer of Ft. Pierce, Florida; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; family friend, Nondus Emler; as well as Lucy and Sassy (his devoted dogs). In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by his son Edgar L. "Eddie" Van Dyke Jr., brothers George Jr., Glenn, and Ronald; and his best friend and fishing buddy Dr. Ed Komraus. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at 6 p.m. at the DeVORE-SNYDER FUNERAL HOME, 637 North State Route 61, Sunbury, Ohio 43074 with Pastor Randy VanDyke officiating the service. Friends may call on the family from 4 p.m. until the time of the service. Private family burial will be held at a later date.
