Eldon E. Grate, 89, formerly of Westerville, OH died Saturday October 14, 2017 at Otterbein – St. Marys. He was born June 19, 1928 in Mc Arthur, OH to James and Edna (Martin) Grate. He married Margaret Hamilton in 1955 in Marion, OH, who preceded him in death in 2002. He is survived by: daughter Ginger (Gene) Denman of Atlanta, GA, son Garth Grate of Columbus, OH, son Allen (Shirley) Grate of Dayton, OH, son Don (Terri) Grate of Mountair, NM, 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren. His love was teaching and he taught mathematics for grades 9-12 at Westerville South High School in Westerville, Ohio for 30 years. He touched the lives of 4,500 students in his career. He was an excellent and patient teacher. His life has been busy these past 14 years at Otterbein – St.Marys. He was involved in the wood shop, helped carry trays at meal times, and was in several small skits over the years that went around entertaining the residents of Otterbein. He also contributed to the community financially by giving to the Life Enrichment Center creation. He was also the local computer guru to some of the residents. He was an avid jogger even back in the early 60's and also, a weight-lifter. He loved working on and using computers and owned one before anyone thought about having a personal computer of their own. Science fiction and philosophy were his favorite pass times. He was dignified and a man before his time. Rites are scheduled to begin 10:00 a.m. Thursday October 19, 2017 at the Meyer Community Chapel of Otterbein – St. Marys. Pastor Bruce McDaniel will officiate the services.
