Boles Jr, Dr. Ewing Thomas
1921 - 2018
Dr. Ewing Thomas Boles, Jr, born May 6, 1921, was the son of Ewing Thomas Boles and Katherine Dwyer Boles. He grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and graduated from Upper Arlington High School in 1938. He attended Ohio State University for 2 years and then transferred to William and Mary College where he graduated in 1942, Phi Beta Kappa. While there he was on the swimming team, was editor of the year book and joined Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. He then attended Harvard Medical School where he received his MD, cum laude, in 1945. After taking a surgical internship in New York City at St. Luke's Hospital, 1945-46, he served in the United States Army Medical Corps for two years, primarily in post-war Japan serving first as a base surgeon at Ashiya Air Base and then at Tachikawa Air Base as head of the surgical service. He moved to New York City in 1948 to complete a 2-year residency at St. Luke's Hospital. And in 1950 he accepted the invitation of Dr. Robert Zollinger to train as a surgical resident at Ohio State University. It was during this time that he became particularly interested in Pediatric Surgery. After this residency, he continued his career at Children's Hospital as a Pediatric Surgeon, earning the respect of colleagues at home and abroad. In 1969 he was named chief and associate medical director of the Department of Pediatric Surgery, positions he held until retirement in 1991. He was also director of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Ohio State University for 19 years. He was a founding member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association and served as its president in 1977. He was also a member of the following: The American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Pediatrics, Robert M. Zollinger Club, The Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, Pan American Medical Association, The International Society for Burn Injuries, The Lilliputian Surgical Society, and local and state surgical and medical societies. He valued scholarship, had a deep and abiding love of the arts, and enjoyed tremendously many outdoor sports. Skiing, bicycling, sailing and golf were particular favorites. All in the family looked forward to summer trips to Glen Lake in northern MI and winter ski holidays. Later in life he took up the game of bridge and became a skilled player. He is survived by his four children, Katherine Smith (Alton), Robert Boles (T.), Janice Boles (Jim Harrington), and Stephen Boles. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Carolyn Cabot (Rick); and many cousins and close friends. His parents, sisters Mary Katherine Boles and Helen Ann Hardy, former wife Belle Boles and grandson Mark Smith predeceased him. At Tom's request, there will be a private family service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who wish may donate in Dr. Boles' memory to Nationwide Children's Hospital at P.O. Box 16810, Columbus, Ohio, 43216.
