Henery, Gary
Gary W. Henery, age 75, of Delaware, died Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Willow Brook Christian Village. He was born September 23, 1942 in Zanesville, Ohio, the son of the late Wayne E. and Edith (Barnfield) Henery. For over 35 years Gary was the Sports Editor for The Delaware Gazette and later was the Editor of the Sunbury News. He took special interest in writing about local sports and the teams at the Delaware County high schools and Ohio Wesleyan University. Gary took great pride in writing about the Delaware County Fair and the Little Brown Jug. Because he favored animals, he also wrote feature articles for The Pet of the Week for the Delaware County Humane Society, which assisted with the adoption of countless pets. Gary was inducted in the District 11 Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2013 and Delaware Hayes High School Hall of Fame in 2003. Gary was a member of the Sunbury Lions Club and attended St. Mary Church. A gardener at heart, he favored working in the yard and tending to his rose and vegetable gardens. He also enjoyed fishing, trips to the historical places of Ohio, and attending the activities of nieces. Kind and honorable, he will be remembered for his generous ways and love for the communities he wrote about. He is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Sandra (Sanderlin) Henery, they were married in St. Paul's Church in Westerville on March 31, 1979. Additional survivors include sister-in-law, Suzanne (Greg) Stanek of Columbus; nieces, Lisa (Joe) Babcanek and Carrie (Neil) Ferreri; great-nieces and nephews, Lillian, Matthew, Anna, and Henry. The family is especially grateful to the staff of Willow Brook at Delaware Run and Captial City Hospice who provided loving care.
