McPherson, George
George McPherson Jr., of Rolla, passed away Monday, December 18, 2017 at the age of 96. He was born in Westfield, New York on July 16, 1921 to the late George McPherson Sr. and Elizabeth (Justice) McPherson. Mr. McPherson earned a bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from Ohio State University in 1943. In 1948 he earned a bachelors degree in education and in 1949, a masters degree in electrical engineering all from Ohio State. He served for a time as a project engineer for the United States Naval Research Laboratory in Washington D.C. Then he began a distinguished teaching career in engineering spanning 32 years. He first taught at the University of Kentucky, then Ohio State University and lastly at the University of Missouri-Rolla, now Missouri University of Science and Technology, retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1985. His professional publications include 18 technical papers, author along with Robert D. Laramore of An Introduction to Electrical Machines and Transformers (New York: Wiley, 1981). He also holds one U.S. Patent. His awards include the Education Award of the St. Louis Section of the International Society of Electrical Engineers (1984); the University of Missouri Thomas Jefferson Award (1989); the "Yes I Can" Award of the NAACP, Rolla Chapter; inducted into the Small Motor and Motion Hall of Fame by the ISEE in 1999. His memberships include; Life Fellow if ISEE; Sigma X; Missouri Academy of Science; NAACP; Phelps County Historical Society; Pickaway County, Ohio Historical Society; and the (Quaker) "Religious Society of Friends." In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister Constance Elizabeth McPherson. A memorial service celebrating the life of George McPherson will be held at 2 pm Saturday, January 27, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church in Rolla.
