George Hugh Wilson. George was a musically gifted family man and native son of Ohio, who dedicated his life to excellence in music education. He passed away of natural causes at his residence, surrounded by family and listening to music. George, born July 5, 1922 and was 95 when he passed away on December 27, 2017. George was son of Austin James Wilson and Jessie Mae Conaway. He attended Pickaway Township School, near Circleville, OH. In 1940 he began studies at Ohio State University, where he majored in music. Schooling was Interrupted from 1943-1946 by a Stint in the Army Air Force in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he played bassoon in the band. He married Jean in 1947 and began their married life and music teaching careers in Maumee, Ohio, lived in Defiance, and later moved to Columbus, where George earned his Ph.D. at Ohio State and taught woodwind instruments and music education. He performed as principal bassoonist with the Columbus Symphony, the Ohio State Wind Quintet, and was conductor of the Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestra for 15 years. He served as presidents of both the Ohio Music Education Association and North Central Division of the Music Educators National Conference. Despite a busy professional life George prized family and friends. The house was filled with music, and his children's friends remember his grand sense of humor. In 1969, Dr. Wilson and Jean moved to Chicago, where he taught at Roosevelt University, chaired the Music Education Department, and served as Dean of the University's Chicago Musical College. In 1998 they moved to Long Beach California, and enjoyed grandchildren, church life, traveling, and playing in a local klezmer band. George is survived by his brother, Robert and sister, Helen; daughter, Jane (Robert) Barboza; son, Jim (Pat Smiley) Wilson; and daughter, Judy (James) Hagerty; grandchildren, Cynthia Barboza (Omar) Wilkes, David (Kris) Barboza, Daniel Hagerty, Warren Hagerty, and John Warren Wilson; great-grandson is Martin Barboza; and 29 nieces and nephews. The family asks that George be remembered with donations to The Wilson Weait Bassoon Studio Award Fund #667615, % The Ohio State University Foundation, 1480 W. Lane Ave., Columbus, OH 43221-3938. A service will be held at 2 PM Saturday, April 7, at the Circleville Presbyterian Church, 134 Mound Street, Circleville, OH 43113.
