Herbert Gern Bletner Obituary
Bletner, D.D.S. Herbert Gern Bletner, D.D.S., formerly of Worthington, Ohio, passed away at his home in Bellville, Ohio, on Tuesday March 28, 2017, at age 87. Born October 28, 1929 in Barberton, Ohio, Bert was the third and youngest child of John Edward and Luella Pearl Hazlett Bletner. A 1947 graduate of Clinton (OH) High School, Bert then earned a Bachelor of Science in Bacteriology (1959) and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree (1964) from The Ohio State University. Dr. Bletner practiced dentistry in a variety of capacities, including private practice in Worthington and Columbus. For 22 years, he was Chief of Oral Medicine and Diagnosis at The Ohio State University Student Health Service, and also an Assistant Adjunct Professor at the College of Dentistry. He took great pride in his work and was a considerate and conscientious educator and healer. Dr. Bletner enjoyed making connections with patients, students and colleagues during his career. He was a loyal Ohio State Buckeye. Bert belonged to the Ohio State Dental Alumni Association, OSURA, and Bellville Masonic Lodge #376. He was a 60-year 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Canton. He and his wife, Nancy were also active members of First Presbyterian Church in Worthington, and more recently of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bellville. Bert was dedicated to home and family and devoted to Nancy Rowe (Wake) Bletner, whom he married December 29, 1957. He is survived by Nancy and their children, Sarah L. Kelley of Columbus, John F. (Caroline) Bletner of Bellville, Susannah R. (Mark Watkins) Bletner of Lander, WY; grandchildren, Alex (Amy) White, of Dublin, Kathryn (Robert) Horn, of Mildenhall, UK, Janna Kelley (Christopher Lewis) of Columbus, Reuben Watkins of Rochester, MN, Sam Bletner of Bellville; and great-granddaughter, Kayvauna Lewis. His brother-in-law Frank Wake of Anchorage, AK, was an especially dear friend. Nieces, Paula Wake Evans and Susan Klein Massey and their families also survive him. Bert was preceded in death by his parents, sister Shirley Klein, and infant brother Robert. Bert was an intelligent man of integrity. Over the years he enriched his family with daily examples of resourcefulness, perseverance, honesty and lovingkindness. He was blessed with the ability to fix almost anything. He inspired those closest to him to aim high, dream big, solve creatively, value education, appreciate quality over quantity, and always to "use our best judgement". A quotation that has been highlighted in Bert's personal notes: "Gone west--not alone into the sunset, but into the company of friends who have gone before." --Albert Ackerman. The family will celebrate Bert's life with a small graveside service and vanilla ice cream cones on Friday, March 31 at Oakwood Cemetery in Bucyrus, Ohio. Pastor Doug Pretorius will preside. Donations may be made in Bert's honor to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 48 Church Street, Bellville, Ohio 44813; or to Ohio Health Mansfield Home Care & Hospice, 1020 Cricket Lane, Mansfield, OH 44906. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Home Health Care and OhioHealth Hospice for their tender care.
