Obituary Condolences

NEWMAN Dr. Howard Newman, Ph.D., 81, of Columbus, died August 11, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Pauline; sons, Ronald, Marc, Robert and Daniel (Ilana Klamka); and his three grandchildren, Yaakov, Bina and Alia. Howard was a professor of pathology at the Ohio State University Medical School for more than 25 years, doing research on atherosclerosis, lipids and lipoproteins. He promoted peer-review publishing in a number of journals and was on the editorial board of the Journal of Lipid Research. Howard and Pauline were pioneers in providing social service programs for children with autism in central Ohio. He served as president for the Central Ohio and the State of Ohio chapters of the National Autism Society, On My Own and Friends of Shalom House. He founded and directed a summer day camp for children with autism at the OSU Nisonger Center as well as Boy Scout troop 626, for scouts with autism or other developmental disabilities. He was an active member of the Ohio Valley Section of the American Assoc. for Clinical Chemistry, the B'nai B'rith Zion Lodge and the Jewish War Veterans. He was the publicity director of the IM Harris B'nai B'rith Bowling League. Howard also loved participating in the Romeos lunch group. Graveside service 1:30 p.m. Friday, August 13 at the New Tifereth Israel Cemetery, corner of Performance Pkwy and Alum Creek Dr. with Rabbi Harold Berman and Jack Chomsky officiating.
