James E. Matson, MD of Worthington, Ohio, passed away at the age of 90 on September 10, 2017 with loved ones by his side. He was a passionate and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who was married to the love of his life, the late Ruth Roberta Matson, for 55 years. While his focus centered around his love of family, he also dedicated his life to healing others and serving his country, which provided leadership and inspiration to many. He is survived by his five children: Sally (Dean) Schmitt of Sarasota, J. (Jane) Matson of Columbus, Jennifer R. (Terry) Bartley of Granville, Melissa (Dan) Tetirick of Columbus, and Jim (Bev) Matson of Worthington, along with 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester J. and Katherine E. Matson of Maynard, OH.
Jim Matson graduated from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1950 and began his career in Anesthesiology in 1959 at the White Cross Hospital before it reopened as Riverside Methodist Hospital in 1961. He was one of the founding partners of Riverside Anesthesiology Associates. He was the President of the Medical Staff and served for many years as a member of the Riverside Methodist Hospitals Foundation Board of Trustees and as a member of the Board of Directors of Riverside Methodist Hospital. He also served as President of the Academy of Medicine and the Ohio Society of Anesthesiologists. He was a delegate to the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Medical Association; and a Founding Board Member of the U.S. Health Plan.
After 38 years in the military, he retired as Captain, Medical Corps, U.S. Naval Reserve, having served active duty for the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War. Interment for both James E. Matson and Ruth R. Matson will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. in 2018.
