Lt. Col. John Pevny Jr. Obituary
Pevny, Jr. , Lt. Col. John
1932 - 2018
Lt. Col. John Pevny, Jr., of Pickerington, went home to his Lord and Savior on January 19, 2018. Born in Newark, NJ, on January 21, 1932, John was the son of John and Anna (Gavora) Pevny. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife Chrysteen in 2002, and their sons Dan in 2015 and Jim in 2016. He is survived by Dan's two children, Jason Pevny and Cami Carlson of Utah; his brother, Ed of California; and several other extended family members. After serving in the USAF from 1952 until 1982, John continued to work for the federal government back home in Central Ohio. He was a deacon at Violet Baptist Church and delighted fellow members with his high tenor harmony, often in special duets with Chrysteen. At church, John worked with the children in the AWANA program, participated in the Prayer Partner Ministry, served as one of the teachers in his Men of God Sunday School class, and was a proud member of the breakfast group called the ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out) and the J.O.Y. group (Just Older Youth), enjoying all of their picnics, Amish retreats, game nights, and other social events. John enjoyed traveling and played racquetball well into his 70s. Since early in 2015, John made his home in a lovely apartment at Carroll Place, an assisted living facility just north of Lancaster, Ohio. The kind and attentive staff members there became another family to John during the last 3 years, and he loved joking around with them and joining in the sing-alongs in the evenings with the various groups that came in to entertain. He also enjoyed the many visits from his faithful friends and the fellowship and love shown him by Chrysteen's cousin Nancy Moore and her family. Viewing hours for John will be 10-11:30 am on Monday, January 22 at Violet Baptist Church, 8345 Blacklick-Eastern Road, Pickerington, with the funeral at 11:30 am, conducted by Pastor Rick Williams who was John's longtime pastor and one of his favorite racquetball competitors. Interment will be later at Violet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in John's memory to Honor Flight Columbus, P.O. Box 12036, Columbus, OH 43212. Arrangements by Cotner Funeral Home, Reynoldsburg, Ohio. Messages may be sent to his family by visiting www.cotnerfuneralhome.com
