Judith Pollock Obituary
Pollock, Judith
Judith Anne Pollock, 66, of Columbus, died November 11, 2017 of probable pancreatic cancer. Judy was born January 29, 1951, to Frank J. and Janet A. (Peters) Pollock in Tarrytown, NY – the first of 4 children. Her childhood homes included Syracuse, NY, Lakewood, NY and finally Chinchilla, PA where they moved when she was in 5th grade. She graduated from Abington Heights High School in 1969. She attended East Stroudsburg State College, majoring in English. She graduated in 1973. She returned to Chinchilla and worked in a bank until 1979, when she moved to Columbus. Judy worked at Orient Developmental Center in the business office for 3 years. She was then employed at the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation for 26 years, serving most of those years as an auditor in the Self-Insured department. She retired in 2008. She fell in love in the summer of 1980 with Julianne Johnson as they both came to terms for the first time that they were lesbians. They were each other's one true love, and were blessed to share a life for over 37 years. Judy and Julie celebrated 2 anniversaries – the first in June of 1980 when they first acknowledged their love for each other, and the second when they finally legally married in Iowa on August 14, 2009. It was another 6 years before Ohio recognized their marriage. Judy was a 2-time survivor of breast cancer. She and Julie and another lesbian couple cofounded Living Proof, a lesbian cancer support group. When Living Proof was founded in 1992, most lesbians would not dare to share their sexual orientation for fear of discriminatory and biased care. Living Proof was able to disband 15 years later as lesbians were being served like anyone with cancer in all aspects of care. This is part of Judy's legacy. Judy's passions included gardening, traveling, walking beaches searching for sea glass and shells, crafting, and doing for others. She was adventurous and was always willing to try something new. She volunteered at the Columbus Metro Parks, Meals on Wheels, the Hilltop Branch of the Columbus Public Library, Planned Parenthood of Greater Columbus, Helping Hands in the Garden, and Redeemer Lutheran Church at monthly food giveaways. She was a loving wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend to many. She was truly a kind and generous soul. Predeceasing Judy are her parents Jan and Frank Pollock, father-in-law Oscar Johnson, nephew Jason Jensen, and godson and special nephew Joshua Staab. She is survived by her wife, Julianne Johnson; sister, Barbara (Skip) Staab of Lecanto, Florida; brothers, Dan (Geordee) Pollock of Waverly, PA and Rob (Natalie) Pollock of Dalton, PA; as well as nephews, Tim Staab, and Mike, Jason, Kyle, Richard and Seth Pollock; and niece, Jena Pollock. She is also survived by Julie's family including her mother, Dody; brothers, Dave (Michele), Paul (Liz), and Andy (Kathy Gerking); and nieces, Anna and Kristina; and nephews, Nate, Aaron (Erin), and Jeremy (Rachel). Whitney Jensen, Jason's wife, also survives Judy. Services will be held for Judy on Saturday, November 18 at 2 pm, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1555 S James Rd., Columbus, OH 43227. Visitation will start at 1 pm. Julie asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Nature Conservancy, Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio, or Mid-Ohio Foodbank.
