Obituary Condolences

Schoen Kathryn T. Schoen, age 94, passed away in Jacksonville, Florida, on February 15. 2017. Dr. Schoen was born in Kentucky in 1922. She attended Northwestern University before becoming a war bride, marrying her high school sweetheart while he was in the U.S. Army. She began teaching in public schools while herself pursuing her education over the years. Dr. Schoen's degrees, B.S. from Capital University and M.S. and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, as well as broad and deep experience in teaching, helped equip her for what becamc a career in teaching and administration at Ohio State. In 1978, she was appointed the first woman Vice President at Ohio State when she was selected to lead Educational Services. Postponing her retirement she later served as the first Dean of the College of Nursing at Ohio State. A tireless teacher, student and advocate of education, she championed the rights of women in higher education, most notably chairing the Ad Hoc Committee on the status ofwomcn at Ohio State helping to move forward talented and capable women generally, including some of her graduate students, who succeeded in obtaining positions of serious responsibility in higher education. Dr. Schoen's papers are archived at the Ohio State University Archives, 2700 Kenny Road, Columbus, Ohio 43210. Dr. Schoen was preceded in death by her husband Richard Schoen and is survived by her two daughters, Sally Naylor of Jacksonville, Florida. Helen Friend of Columbus, Ohio; grandsons, Richard Naylor of Jacksonville, Florida, and Nathan Friend of Allentown, Pennsylvania; and five great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kathryn T. Schoen Endowment Fund at Ohio State.
