Louis Komives Obituary

KOMIVES Louis J. Komives, age 59, of Pickerington, died Sunday, December 13, 2009 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital of cardiac arrest after a long struggle with pneumonia. Born November 10, 1950 in Columbus to the late John and Rose M. (Simon) Komives, he was a 1968 graduate of Columbus South High School, and received his BS in education from Ohio State University in 1972. He retired in June, 2008 from Columbus City Schools after 35 years with the system, most of those years spent at Lincoln Park Elementary and Ohio Avenue Elementary; the last three years he spent as a PAR consultant, mentoring new teachers. He was a CEA Faculty Representative for most of his teaching career. An avid Buckeye fan, he also enjoyed coaching his son and daughter in PYAA sports, working in his garden, and relaxing and reading in his pool. Lou's request was to be an organ and tissue donor. He leaves behind his wife of 31 years, Jan; son, Joshua (Erin) Komives; daughter, Maurin (Derek) Komives Shaffer; sister, Joyce Oakley; brother, John (LuAnn) Komives; and numerous other relatives. A memorial service will be held 5 p.m. Wednesday at the DWAYNE R. SPENCE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, 550 Hill Road N. (St. Rt. #256); the family will receive friends following the service until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to the American Heart Association, or their favorite charity, in Lou's memory. Online condolences at www.spencefuneralhome.com

To the Komives family,

I just heard the news, and I and truly sad to hear of the loss of Lou. I remember him as no-nosense teacher who also loved to tell jokes. He was very helpful to me my first year working at Ohio Avenue Elementary.

I heard of Louie's passing through a mutual friend, Herb Burton. Louie was a great friend in high school and at Ohio State. We played a lot of basketball together - usually out in Pickerington, and Louie was always a fun companion.
My condolences to his family.
