Maurice Edmund "Ed" Hassfurther, 90, of Columbus, went home to be with the Lord on September 19, 2017. Ed was born on January 2, 1927 in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Edmund and Stella (Metzger) Hassfurther. He honorably served his country in the Navy during World War II. In 1950 he graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and followed with a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue in 1959. He was employed at Battelle Memorial Institute for 32 years. He attained the position of Senior Electrical Engineer and Research Leader and held several patents. As Athletic Director at Saint Cecilia School, he was prominent in establishing their football program in the 1960s. He was a longtime member of Saints Simon and Jude Parish where he served as a former Eucharistic Minister and Morning Prayer Group participant. He was a precinct worker and judge for over 20 years for the Franklin County Board of Elections. He was also a member of the West Jefferson Post of the American Legion and volunteered his time at the front desk of the Lincoln Village Senior Center for several years. As an avid golfer, he participated in many golf leagues and also enjoyed rooting for Purdue sports teams, fishing, playing cards with his poker groups, taking movies of his family, cultivating roses and working in his yard. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years Dolores (Dee) Hassfurther, children Martha Ellis and Stephen Paul Hassfurther, grandson Kyle Friend, in-laws Orville and Mary Zeller, brother-in-law Orville Zeller, sisters-in-law Dorothy Ball, Frankie Crocetti and Jeanette Jones. He is survived by his children, Terri (Dennis) Hooper, Tom (Jan) Hassfurther, Kevin (Linda) Hassfurther, Amy (Jeff) Friend and Julie (Mitch) Zimmer; son-in-law, Karry Ellis; sister-in-law, Rose Munn; brother-in-law, Charles Zeller, 17 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends may visit from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, September 24, 2017 at Schoedinger Grove City, 3920 Broadway, Grove City, OH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at Saints Simon and Jude Catholic Church, 9350 High Free Pike, West Jefferson, OH. Interment will follow in Saint Joseph Cemetery. The family wishes to give special thanks to the staff at Blanton House and Kindred Hospice for the wonderful care and attention given to Ed.
