Michael Donnally Obituary
Donnally, Michael
1953 - 2017
Michael Donnally, aged 64, passed away Thursday morning, August 17, 2017 after a two year battle with prostate cancer. Michael (Mike) Donnally was born on February 8, 1953 in Columbus, Ohio, son of Ralph William (Bill) Donnally and Patricia (Patty) Rector Donnally. Mike had a wonderful childhood near grandparents and cousins, whether playing in the ravine near his house in Columbus or playing tennis and baseball at Whetstone High School. He graduated with a degree in botany from Miami University, where he met his wife, Rebecca (Becca) Rosser, whom he married following her graduation in 1974. After college Mike answered his call to ministry, becoming a United Methodist pastor and serving ten churches over his 39 years in West Ohio Conference. During his ministry Mike challenged his churches to passionately pursue mission, to meaningfully connect with Christ and to practice worship in diverse ways by bringing expanded technology into the worship service. Mike was also a talented preacher and committed counselor, making meaning of both life and scripture and spending countless hours with those in need.
Ever-committed to his wife and daughters and despite the demands of full time ministry, Mike found a way to be present for volleyball games, dance performances, orchestra concerts, and anywhere else his children needed him. Later in life he found immense joy in the time spent with his three grandchildren. In whatever time he had for himself, Mike was an avid reader (on vacation he could read a book a day), athlete (he could drive a golf ball a mile), and hobbyist (he even picked up drone flying in his last two months of life). As Mike's favorite theologian, Charles Schulz, said, "All his life he tried to be a good person. Many times, however, he failed. For after all, he was only human. He wasn't a dog." Mike is survived by his wife, Becca Donnally; daughters, Shannon Spasova, Erin (Bill) Drake, Eileen (Cole) Cooper; mother, Patty Donnally; grandchildren, Desmond Drake, Rollin Cooper, and Kettricken Cooper; and brother, Timothy Donnally. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 AM on Monday, August 21 at North Broadway United Methodist Church. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 AM in the same location. The service can also be viewed via livestream at http://north-broadway.org/live-streaming.
