Michael Grayem Obituary
Grayem Michael Grayem, 73, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday July 7, 2017. He was born on January 21, 1944 to John Grayem and Rosella Morris Grayem. Mike was born in Jackson, Ohio and spent time in his youth in the south end of Columbus and Reynoldsburg, Ohio. He graduated from Reynoldsburg High School in 1962. After high school, Mike attended classes and played varsity basketball at what was then known as Otterbein College. He graduated in 1966 with a Bachelor's degree in Education. Mike often boasted of his countless paid and unpaid roles in life, but his passion was working with youth as both an educator and a coach. He started his professional career with Hamilton Township High School as an English teacher and varsity basketball coach. He moved to Westerville High School where he also taught English and served as a junior varsity basketball coach for the Wildcats. In 1972, Mike joined the staff at Reynoldsburg High School where he taught English and a favorite class for many students known as "The Wide World of Sports". He also coached the Raiders varsity basketball team for several years during the 1970's and 1990's. For 45 years, during his time off the court and out of the classroom, Mike worked at Blacklick Woods Golf Course where he was once kindly referred to in a local news publication as the "surly staff behind the counter". Mike was an active golfer himself and enjoyed meeting new people at the course everyday he was there. Mike found the love of his live while attending Otterbein and in 1967 married Jill Jenkins Grayem. Together they raised two sons, Jason (Katie) Grayem and Jeremy (Amy) Grayem; and enjoyed three grandchildren, Noah, Lily and Owen. Mike was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild. Mike is survived by brother, John Grayem (Myra); and several nieces and nephews. The family will be greeting friends and relatives on Tuesday, July 11 from 12-2 and 5-8 p.m. at COTNER FUNERAL HOME, 7369 E. Main St. Reynoldsburg, OH, and a memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 12 at Messiah Lutheran Church, 1200 Waggoner Rd, Reynoldsburg OH.
