Nichols Vorys Obituary
Vorys, Nichols
1924 - 2017
Dr. Nichols Vorys, formerly of Bexley, Gahanna, and New Albany, died at the age of 92 on Monday, July 10, 2017 at home in Granville. He was born August 18, 1924 in Lancaster, Ohio, son of the late George W. and Mary (Hershberger) Vorys. Nick graduated from Lancaster High School, then attended Dartmouth College (Class of 1946) for one year before enlisting in the Army for WWII. He served as a staff sergeant in the 101st Infantry Division. He graduated from Dartmouth after the war. He married his college sweetheart, Ellen Stoneman, in February, 1949. She supported them working as a history teacher, as Nick obtained his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Nick had a long and successful medical career spanning 40 years which began in the OB/GYN department at The Ohio State University Medical Center. During his time in academics, he was at the forefront in the development of the birth control pill, commercially released for contraception use in 1960. He led numerous research and clinical collaborations funded by NIH and GD Searle Company. When reproductive technology and IVF developed in the 1970's, he set up and developed one of the nation's first Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility programs with his colleagues at Ohio State. Following his academic career, he continued with a successful clinical practice in Infertility for 15-20 more years. He was devoted to his work in OB-GYN and Infertility and derived much emotional fulfillment in helping couples enjoy a family life. Even after retirement, Nick remained interested in medicine and committed to improving healthcare information delivery in communities. Nick was a man of tremendous energy, many intellectual interests, love for family, friends and his golden retrievers. He loved a good laugh and enjoyed helping people. He lived long and well and lives on in the memory of all of us who knew and loved him. He was a devoted family man, and is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Ellen Stoneman Vorys; children, George Nichols Vorys, Ann Stoneman Vorys and Frederic Stoneman Vorys; daughter-in-law Anne Marie; his grandchildren, George Christian Vorys, Frank Thang Vorys and Kyle Nichols Vorys; sister Marianne Vorys Minister and other family. Friends may call 4-6 pm Friday, July 14, 2017 at the SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL, 1051 E. Johnstown Rd., Gahanna, OH 43230. Private interment at Green Lawn Cemetery.
