Patrick Conrad Winans Obituary
Winans Patrick Conrad Winans, MD, 78 years old, of Bexley, died at his home on April 28, 2017. Born on December 17, 1938, to the late Joseph Floyd and Mary Catherine (Teeter) Winans of Shelby, Pat was a 1956 graduate of Shelby High School. After attending Wittenberg College for one year, where he was a member of the football team, Pat received a bachelor's degree from The Ohio State University, and was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity. He received a medical degree from the OSU College of Medicine in 1965, and completed his year internship at Grant Medical starting July 1965. Following the completion of his internship, he enlisted for a two year term as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force. Upon return from his service, Pat began his residency in September of 1968 at Mount Carmel East Hospital, and graduated from his residency in 1971. Instrumental in establishing Canyon Medical Center, Pat practiced as a physician there for 35 years. He became one of the first internists at Mt. Carmel East Hospital. Among his many involvements and accolades, he was awarded Doctor of the Year in 2009. Outside of work, Pat was a lifelong active member in Lutheran and Presbyterian churches, enjoyed skiing, golf, the opera, classical music, sports, and history, especially WWII. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Ruth Marie Winans-Wires. He is survived by daughters, Elizabeth Winslea, Barbara Bagley, and Amy Brown from his marriage to Carol (Gearhart) Winans of 35 years, who survives; stepchildren, Tracy, Allison, Lauren, Susanne McAdams and Mary Scott, through his marriage to Christine (Jolly) Winans, who survives, and with whom Pat worked at Canyon Medical center for 20 years. Pat also leaves sister, Barbara Novak; 16 beloved grandchildren; as well as, a host of family, friends and colleagues. The family will observe a Memorial Celebration at Indianola Presbyterian Church, 1970 Waldeck Ave, Columbus, on Saturday, May 20, 2017, with visitation at 10 a.m. and memorial at 11 a.m. Pastor Susan Smith officiating. A private inurnment will be held at Oakland Cemetery in Shelby, at a later date. Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Mt. Carmel Hospital, 6001 E. Broad St., Columbus, 43213.
