Bowers, Richard A.
1950 - 2018
Richard "Rich" A. Bowers, age 67, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at home with his wife by his side. He was born in Columbus, OH on July 10, 1950 to Mary and William Bowers. He was a graduate of Upper Arlington High School and went on to pursue education throughout his life. Rich earned a BS from The Ohio State University and received an MLS from San Jose State University. Most of his professional career was spent in the field of computer science. He founded The Optical Publishing Association before working for CompuServe, AOL, OSU, and most recently at McGraw Hill Education. Rich was an adventurer at heart with a natural curiosity of how all things worked. His journeys connected him with many different people, groups, and organizations working to better society. Most recently his involvement in local programs such as OHIO DECA and TEDxColumbus allowed Rich to impart his spirit of continued learning and expression to others in his community. He was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law Ed Cheaney. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Paula (Cheaney) Quickel Bowers; and children, Sarah (Brandon) Gabel and Jordan (Kate) Quickel; granddaughters, Cheaney, Tenley, and Piper Gabel; siblings, Pat (Valerie) Collins and Mike (Christine) Collins; as well as his extended family—his mother-in-law, Terrie Cheaney, Sally (David) Alger, Phebe (David) Engel, David Cheaney, and his best friend, Richard Akers. Family and friends may visit on Sunday, March 25, 2018 from 1-4 p.m. at the Schoedinger Northwest Chapel, 1740 Zollinger Rd., Columbus, OH 43221. Rich's family would like to thank the doctors and staff at The James, Dr. Jay Martin, and Kindred Hospice for their care. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The TEDxColumbus Fund at the Columbus Foundation, 1234 East Broad St., Columbus, OH 43205.
