Richard S. Sheward Obituary
Sheward Richard S. Sheward, age 73, of New Albany, died Saturday, June 24, 2017 at St. Ann's Hospital, Westerville, OH, after a brief illness. Formerly a judge for the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas, Richard retired in 2015 following 24 years of continuous service. A devoted father, grandfather and brother, he will be dearly missed by his daughters, Carrin (JP) Wester, of Gahanna and Alison (Jon) Doepping, of Centennial, CO; two granddaughters, Kendall Nicole and Elizabeth Claire Wester; brother, Buck (Ann) Sheward, of Frankfort, OH; sister, Cindy Schwarz, of Ft. Myers, FL; several nieces and nephews; and many friends and colleagues. Richard was born May 21, 1944 in Jackson, Ohio, a son the late Delmar Jay and Mildred (Rapp) Sheward. A 1962 graduate of Jackson High School; he attended the University of Miami on a football scholarship before finishing his undergraduate degree at Ohio University in 1967. Richard served as a captain in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. After his military service, he attended Capital University Law School, where he received his Juris Doctorate. After being admitted to the bar (achieving his boyhood dream of becoming a lawyer), he began his law career as an assistant prosecutor before beginning private practice, and then later serving as a Municipal Court judge before his election to the bench of the Franklin County Common Pleas. At the time of his retirement, Richard had the longest continuous tenure of the sitting judges in that court. When not practicing law or serving on the bench, Richard loved riding his Harley, driving his 1973 Corvette or reading biographies. Most of all, he loved his family. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at the SCHOEDINGER MIDTOWN CHAPEL, 229 East State Street, Columbus, OH 43215, where the funeral service will be held 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 29, 2017.
