Robert John "Bob" Harrington Obituary
Harrington Robert "Bob" John Harrington, age 89, of Friendship Village of Dublin, passed away Sunday March 26, 2017. Son of the late Harold "Fish" and Alice Harrington, brother of the late Donald E. Harrington and husband of the late Joanne "Josie" Harrington, the absolute love of his life for 62 years. He was born in Bellavista, Peru on January 9, 1928. He spent his childhood/school years in Panama and Lima, Peru (along with his 18 first cousins) before coming to the states in 1941. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Naval Air Program and served on a destroyer (USS Frank E. Evans) until WWII ended. On the GI Bill, he attended Cornell University initially and eventually graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1951 with a BS in Business (Major in Accounting). He was a member of the Delta Gamma Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He met Josie at Miami (a Miami Merger) and they married after her graduation in 1952. They moved to Brooklyn, New York where he took a job with Price Waterhouse (CPA firm). He always referred to himself as a "bean counter" by trade. In 1953, he was transferred to Caracas, Venezuela where they spent 2 years. In 1955, they were transferred to Columbus, Ohio (where they took up residence in Upper Arlington) to be near family in Dayton and Akron. He joined The Ohio Company, a securities broker/dealer, in 1957 where he held various positions from Treasurer to Executive Vice President and finally Director. After 30 years of faithful service, he retired in 1987. He was a member of Worthington Hills Country Club for 47 years where he enjoyed golfing, gin rummy, the "Senior Seven" and the friendships of many. He truly came into his own after retirement when he took a watercolor painting class from Leland McClelland at Upper Arlington High School. Watercolor painting became his passion, but not commercially (he only accepted a signed $1 bill for any of his paintings). He was a member of the Fort Myers Beach Art Association and the Upper Arlington Art League. He cherished the pure challenge and subsequent satisfaction of his craft. The display / procurement of his artwork has been treasured by many! He thought himself to be blessed, lucky and fortunate (enjoying 30 years of retirement!), but truly he was the one who brought a smile to many faces and enriched the lives of others around him. He was a true gentleman! He will be greatly missed by his loving family. Children, Mike (Jacque) Harrington, Kathy Harrington and Tom (Jen) Harrington; grandchildren, Dan (Kellie) Harrington, Lindsay Harrington, Jason (Heather) Jones, Drew (Elane) Jones, Nick Jones, Dylan Harrington and Taylor Harrington; great grandchildren, Clara, Marcus, Wesley, Quinn and a fifth on the way! Visitation with family will be on Thursday, April 6, 2017 from 12-2 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus Ohio. Followed by a memorial service and reception at 3 p.m. at Friendship Village of Dublin, 6000 Riverside Drive in the convocation room. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bob's memory to The Employee Scholarship Fund at Friendship Village, 6000 Riverside Drive, Dublin Ohio 43017.
