Robert Payne Obituary
Payne, Robert
1923 - 2017
Robert Ford Payne Sr., age 94, loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great great grandfather passed away peacefully on September 17, 2017 in Zephyrhills, Florida. He married his childhood sweetheart, Anna and on August 18, 2017 they celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary. Robert was born to Robert Richard and Myrtle (Pettit) Payne on July 8, 1923 in Circleville, Ohio. The family moved to Columbus in 1935 and Robert went on to graduate from Central High School. Shortly after, he joined 3C Camp for teenagers where his passion grew for photography and working with his hands. In 1942, he was drafted into the Army Tank Corps and honorably discharged in 1943. Growing up in the great depression era of the 30's had an impact on his life. He had a very strong work ethic and taught himself to do what was needed. Throughout his life, with all the experience he gathered from growing up on a farm, his military service, and the many companies he worked for after the Army, Robert was a master of fixing anything mechanical. He had ideas for the future such as a driver-less car, seat belts and head lights years before they were actually created. He used this knowledge and passion to open his own neighborhood gas station in Clintonville, Ohio in 1955. He built up the business for 55 years, taking a small shop to a 5-bay full service station. When Robert was 50 years old, a customer approached him regarding teaching high school. He obtained his Bachelor of Education degree from Ohio State University and went on to become a beloved teacher at Walnut Ridge High School for 17 years. The students not only loved him for being a great vocational teacher, but because he took the time to help them develop English and math skills as well. Robert was a man of many talents. He taught himself how to play the guitar, piano and harmonica. He also loved to draw and paint as well as make a variety of home improvements. He loved to bowl, race cars and was an avid fan of the Cincinnati Reds, Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cincinnati Bengals. One might call him a true Renaissance man. Robert was an active member of the American Legion for 73 years and a member of the Freemasons for 65 years. Robert is preceded in death by his son Robert F Payne Jr., his sister June O'Brien and his brother Russell Payne. He is survived by his wife, Anna (Triacheff) Payne and their 4 children, Victoria (Tom) Keffer, Patrick (Vickie) Payne, Florene (Jack) Rogers and Stephanie (Robert Foster) Payne. He also leaves behind 8 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Special devotion to David and Lolita Payne. Visitation will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at EVANS FUNERAL HOME, 4171 E Livingston Ave, Columbus, OH. Funeral Service will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Garden Chapel, 5600 E Broad St, Columbus, OH at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 25, 2017. Interment to follow. www.evansfuneralhome.net
