1920 - 2017 Obituary Condolences
Murphy Robert T. Murphy. Born April 24, 1920 in Mansfield, Ohio. Graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1938, DePauw University in 1942 with a major in chemistry and from the Naval Reserve Midshipmen's School at Columbia University in 1943 as an Ensign. At DePauw, he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and was the senior student manager of the university baseball team. He married Margaret Anne Horr, also a DePauw graduate, on December 1, 1943 while on leave from his ship. He was a gunnery officer on the USS AULICK, DD569 which served for a period of time in the American Theater of Operations Training Command in the San Francisco, California area and then in the invasion of Guam, Palau and Leyte in the Philippine Islands. After the war, much of his married life was spent in Mansfield, Ohio, although there was a three-year period in Danville, California while he was Plant Manager of Pacific Rubber in Oakland and another of the same length in Bucyrus, Ohio while he was manager of the Anchor-Swan hose plant there. While living in Mansfield he was Plant Manager of the Mansfield Tire and Rubber Company and Vice President of Manufacturing of Therm-O-Disc. In Mansfield, he was president of Jaycees, Toastmasters 840 and Rotary. In 1980, he, Margaret and daughter, Megan moved from Bucyrus to Worthington, Ohio. Five years later he and Margaret moved to northwest Columbus, and he retired in 1986. In 2004 after Margaret was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, he moved with her to Kensington Place, part of what was then Lutheran Village. In 2007, they moved to the assisted living part of that campus, then part of Summit's Trace Healthcare Center. After Margaret's death in 2012, he moved back to Mansfield into Primrose Retirement Community. Bob's journey in this life ended on Sunday May 21, 2017. He was preceded in death by wife of 68 years Margaret, son Scott, great grandson Samuel Krouse, parents Willard Murphy and Nettie (Hagerman) Murphy both descendants of Ohio pioneers, and sisters Vivian Hollingsworth and Evelyn Oster. Survived by children, Michael (Sally), Clarksville, Tennessee, Stephen (Patricia), Mansfield, Ohio, Eileen Anding (John), Grand Rapids, Michigan, Megan Boyer (Steven), Kearney, Nebraska; daughter-in-law, Maureen, Wayne, Pennsylvania; Scott's first wife, Joann Murphy, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; 14 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at All Saints Lutheran Church, 6770 N. High St., Worthington, Ohio with Rev. Jeffrey Wise officiating on Thursday, May 25 at 1:30 p.m. Inurnment in the church columbarium. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations be made to All Saints Lutheran Church in memoriam.
