Sharon Lynn Dent Pennell slipped quietly into the arms of God where she will spend eternity on September 3, 2017. She was born on May 21, 1940, to Robert J. and Mary Ethel Young Dent. Sharon was a graduate of Columbus West High School. She was valedictorian of the class of Jan. '58. At West she was elected president of her senior class, the first female to hold such a position. She was also president of G.A.A. And a member of the National Honor Society. She received a BS in Education from The Ohio State University and was president of her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega. Sharon was active in student government and served as secretary of the W.S.G.A. And was elected to the Mirrors and Chimes Honoraries. Sharon received a MS in Economic Education from Ohio University. Sharon retired in 1992 from the Columbus Public Schools having taught for 30 years. She is a member of the Crossroads United Methodist Church (formerly Brookshire) and has served her church in various capacities during her 55 year membership. Sharon was a past president of the Alpha Ioto Alpha Alumnae Chapter, treasurer and past trustee of the Hilltop Historical Society; life member and former officer of the West High School Alumni Association; life member of The Ohio State University Alumni Association and the Ohio Retired Teachers Association; active for many years in the Briggs Booster Association; recipient of the Columbus Public Schools "Good Apple" Award, the Sohio Excellence in Teaching Award, and a Valley Forge Freedom Foundation Award. Sharon was named a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar and was recognized in 1995 as a "Woman of Character" by the Westside Messenger and the greater Hilltop Community Development Corporation. In 2005 Sharon was inducted into the West High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame. Sharon was happiest when organizing a family get-together, planning a party, teaching 5th grade, preparing for a class play, watching a ball game or spending the day traveling the back roads with her best buddy, Paul. Preceded in death by her parents, sister and brother-in-law Sandra and Tom Wells, brother Robert H. Dent, niece Kelly Sue Wells, nephew Jason Dent. A devoted wife, daughter, sister, aunt, teacher and friend, Sharon will be deeply missed by those whose lives she touched. She is survived by her best friend and husband of 55 years, Paul; brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Susan Dent; brothers-in-law and their wives, David and Vickie Pennell and Stephen and Bert'e Pennell; nieces and nephews, Robert Douglas Wells, Robert Michael and Leslie Dent, Jon and Debbie Dent, Micah and Karen Dent, Stephanie and David Swillinger, Sheldon Pennell, Bethany and Frank Barroqueiro, Travis Dent; great-nieces and great-nephews, Victoria Wells, Zachary (Tammy), Chelsea and Seth Swillinger, Megan (Sage) Williams, Hayden and Gabby Barroqueiro, Cade, Cael, Cullen and Conlan Dent, Billy Chaney, Jamie, Tyler, Stephanie and Emma Dent, Shane and Kyle Dent; special aunt, Lorna Wylie; very special friends, Steve and Christy Dickerson, John and Marsha Smith, George and Patty Mingus, Pete and Pat Eyer, Tony and Shawn Thomas, Marcia Scherocman, and Garnett Davis. A special thank-you to the wonderful and loyal group of Alpha Chi Omegas and their spouses who gave so much love to Sharon over the years. You are all so special to her. Friends may call at Crossroads United Methodist Church,1100 S. Hague Ave. on Thursday 3-8 p.m., Friday 3-8 p.m., where service will be held Saturday 10 a.m. at the church.
