Young, Shelly
Shelly Ann (Leister) Young, 60, died on Sunday, August 6, 2017, following a valiant struggle with cancer, at home in Thousand Oaks, California. Her husband John and granddaughter Madeline were at her side. Shelly was born June 9, 1957, to Frances Pearl (Moldowan) and Charles H. Leister, in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan; both preceded her in death, as did her sister, Charlene Marie (Leister) Machleit. Shelly loved dogs, horses, camping, and people. She was a registered nurse, beginning her career at Cottage Hospital in Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., and continuing to Cetus Corp., in Emeryville, Calif., and finally, Amgen, Inc., in Thousand Oaks, from which she retired in 1999. Shelly is survived by her husband of 35 years, John David Young; her stepdaughters, the Rev. Laura Jane Young and Megan Elizabeth (Craig) Van Aelst; son-in-law, Raymond F. (Chip) Moats III; and grandchildren, Elizabeth Jane and Nicholas John Moats, and Craig Allen Jr. (Danielle), Madeline Isobel, and Amelia Rose Van Aelst; great-grandson, Alaric James Van Aelst; niece, Renae Marie (Ronald) Soeder; great-nieces Samantha Renae and Eva Marie Church; nephew Erric Lawrence Machleit; great-nieces Paige Marie Machleit, Delaney Marie Driver, and Brooke Mackenzie Machleit, and great nephew, Michael Ryan Machleit; brother-in-law, Lawrence John (Linda) Machleit; and her Jack Russell Terriers, Bart and Otis. A memorial service will take place Saturday, August 26, at 3 p.m., in Potter Chapel at Worthington United Methodist Church, 600 High St., Worthington, Ohio, 43085, the Rev. Cyndy Garn presiding. A calling hour with the family will be in Potter Chapel from 2-3 p.m. the same day, and a burial before that at 11 a.m. at Kingwood Memorial Park, 8230 Columbus Pike, Lewis Center, Ohio. A memorial service was held in California on August 10. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Gentle Barn (www.gentlebarn.org).
