Shirley Poirier (nee Romanshek) of Gahanna passed away on January 14, 2018 from Alzheimer's disease. Shirley was born on June 26, 1942 to August and Irene Romanshek in Waukesha, Wisconsin. She is preceded in death by her mother and father; and sister, Nancy Lueck. She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Gene; children, Patricia Schamma and Michael (Erin) Poirier; and grandchildren, Amanda Schamma of Columbus, Joshua, and Alex of Glenford, Ohio; sister, Carol Fischer of Muskego, Wisconsin; and several nieces and nephews. Shirley was meant to be a teacher. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in elementary education, Shirley began teaching in Hales Corners, WI. She moved to Columbus from Muskego, WI after marrying her high school sweetheart, Gene, in December 1965. She taught in the Groveport Madison school district before moving to the Reynoldsburg School District in the early 70's. After retirement from the public school system, she served as the principal of St. Pius X Catholic School in Reynoldsburg and spent a year at St. Francis School in Newark, Ohio. Shirley received her Master's Degree in education from the Ohio State University. Shirley was a very generous woman, often giving of her personal time and talents to family, friends, and the community. She was a member of St. Matthew's knitting ministry where she knit over 2,000 hats and scarfs for newborns and the homeless. The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude for the exceptional care given by all the caregivers at the Inn at Winchester Trail and Capital City Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the . Arrangements were entrusted to SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL 1051 E. Johnstown Rd., Gahanna, Ohio 43230. Instead of a visitation, Shirley's family will receive friends for one hour at St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church 807 Havens Corners Rd, Columbus, OH 43230 on January 19, 2018 starting at 10am, followed by a mass at 11am.
