KLOTH Shirley Ruth Olsen Kloth, died June 15, 2010 in Columbus, Ohio. She was born March 10, 1925 in Rocky River, Ohio. She graduated from Rocky River High School in 1941 and Case Western Reserve University in 1944 with a BA in Journalism. Starting her career in journalism at the Cleveland Press city desk, Shirley later worked for the Cleveland Plain Dealer covering west side suburban politics. From the tragedy of the October, 1944, Cleveland East Ohio Gas explosion, to the humor of the Bay Village fire truck that was too tall for their fire station, she was committed to a thorough research of the facts. Her writing also regularly appeared in the two weekly newspapers, West Life, and the Sun Herald. Before moving to Detroit in 1977, the Rocky River City Council recognized Shirley for her dedication and years of service. While in Detroit, she quickly found work with the Community News and Spinal Column Newsweekly and volunteered as the newsletter editor for the Michigan ACLU. Even in retirement, she wrote occasionally for the Port Clinton (Ohio) News Herald. After her second retirement, she was an active board member of the Cape Coral (Florida) Public Library. Apart from her news reporting, Shirley was an outspoken advocate, an involved citizen, and a voracious news hound. She was a supporter of Common Cause Ohio, and was a charter member of the Cleveland Chapter of the League of Women Voters. She will be long remembered for her love of the news, iced tea, a glass of white wine, a shrimp cocktail, and a clearly articulated opinion. A devoted daughter, wife, and mother, she was preceded in death by her parents Edwin and Ruth Olson, husband of 54 years, Carl, and her son Johnny. She is survived by two sons, Chris (Julie Harmon) of Columbus, and Tim (Lisa Van Divender) of Cincinnati; two grandchildren, Jesse and Adley; and three great- grandchildren, Devon, Madelyn, and Kaya. The family appreciates the skilled and compassionate care she received at the Westminster-Thurber Community, especially the Pathway House. Special thanks to Dr. Jeffery Milks for his exceptional care. A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at Westminster-Thurber Community, 717 Neil Ave. A memorial service to be held in Cleveland will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory to IMPACT Safety, 35 East Gay St., Suite 512, Columbus, Ohio 43215, or West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church, 20401 Hilliard Blvd., Rocky River, Ohio 44116 or Westminster-Thurber Community, 717 Neil Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43215. The hearts of my family reach out to Shirley's and especially to our good friend, Chris. Never having met her she sounds like a gift to this world and the kind of mum who'd raise a Chris. Go in peace. - Norman and family, British Columbia.
