Stephen Valentine Breech Obituary
Breech Stephen Valentine Breech, 76, of Dublin, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2017. He was born on May 26, 1941 to the late Kenneth and Kathryn (Whetsel) Breech. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Theresa; daughters, Laura (Ken) Vick, Lesley (Jack Basil) Breech, and Jennifer Rhoads; brothers, Ron (Thelma), Jack (Sandy Hammond), and Larry (Theresa). He adored his grandchildren and they adored him back, Madelon Basil, Olivia Basil, Allison Rhoads, and Adam Rhoads. Steve rose from a hardscrabble childhood, unknowingly beginning his professional retail career when he accepted his first job as a bag boy at the hometown grocery store, Big Bear Stores, Inc., and where he met his wife, Theresa. He later held positions in almost all of the grocery chain's operations during his more than 40 years with the company. In 1995, Steve became the fifth Big Bear president in the company's nearly 75-year history. In recent years, Steve served as President of The Hadler Companies, a Columbus-based commercial real estate development firm. He and Theresa loved to travel and enjoyed many international trips, with special memories of England, Germany, and Ireland. He taught his family the value of a strong work ethic, a love of impeccable landscaping, and that achieving childhood dreams is always possible. Steve firmly believed it's not about the cards you're dealt, but how you play the hand. Steve's strength carried him to his inspiring victory over lung cancer, having survived over 4 years post diagnosis. He was beloved by many, and has many close friends and colleagues who will miss his vibrant smile, easy-going style, generosity of spirit, wealth of knowledge, and quick-wittedness. Steve's family will receive friends 4-8 p.m. on Monday, July 10, 2017 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus, OH 43221. The Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Our Mother of Sorrows Chapel, located on the grounds of Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery, 6440 South High Street, Lockbourne, Ohio 43137. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to The Stephen V. Breech Fund - 315910 at The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, 660 Ackerman Rd., P.O. Box 183112, Columbus, Ohio 43218-3112. (Checks payable to: OSU Foundation.)
