Thomas Beckett Reed III Obituary
Reed III, Thomas Beckett 1928 - 2018
Thomas Beckett Reed, III, of Galena, died on January 7, 2018 in Brooklyn, NY. He was born in Commercial Point, OH on May 17, 1928, the son of Harry and Hazel (Beckett) Reed, grandson of Ohio state senator John O. Beckett and great-great-grandson of Wiley H. Beckett, one of the founders of Commercial Point. Thom Reed, as he was known, received a BA and double MA in English and Sociology from OSU, and began his career as a radio and TV announcer, writer and producer, for WBNS-TV and WOSU radio in Columbus, where he met and married then-producer and performer Ellen Jean Carter. They were life and business partners for nearly 60 years, until Jean's death in 2011. Following early years of travel, the Reeds raised their family in Columbus and established one of the first fair housing rental companies in Ohio. Thom was an ardent patron of the arts in Columbus, and an avid supporter of adult literacy programs, helping several men learn to read. He was particularly proud of his help for one adult student, who achieved through their work together the ability to read bedtime stories to his daughter. In his spare time, Thom wrote short stories and plays, several of which were produced Off-Off Broadway on Theatre Row in NYC. He was also a voracious reader and an avid and curious and opinionated follower of American national politics. Thom was a passionate participant in the lives of his children and grandchildren, and was adored by family and friends alike. He was a charming and electrifying raconteur with a generous heart and an insatiable drive to connect with others. He could make any moment into a party, and did, and his absence leaves a powerful void. He is survived by his family: daughter, Maggi-Meg Reed (Michael Schubert and children, Wildman Schubert Reed and Proof Schubert Reed); son, Thomas Beckett Reed, IV (Inesa Levitz and children, Emma Katerina Reed and Thomas Beckett Reed, V); and son, Hazen Beckett Reed (Susan Muther and sons, Tabor Lindan Reed and Risdon Beckett Reed). There will be no public service. Donations may be sent to the Havener Eye Institute of OSU Medical Center or to the of America. Thom suffered from both macular degeneration and dementia in his final years, and would be deeply pleased by contributions in his name that might help others to avoid these terrifying and soul-stealing conditions. In lieu of mourning, he asked that those who knew and loved him connect with friends in his honor, "to drink and sing and dance until the sun comes up and it is a brand new day with an empty slate to be written upon." To you, Thom!
