Thomas Wilson Obituary
Wilson, Thomas
1946 - 2017
Thomas Gordon Wilson, 70, of Worthington, passed away on Monday, September 18th. He is survived by his wife, Joan; and his children, Emily and David. Tom was born October 21st, 1946, in Sumter, South Carolina, where as a boy he developed a love of exploring nature that would guide him throughout his life. He attended Clemson University where he participated in Army Reserve Officer's Training Corps and studied entomology. He earned a graduate degree in biochemistry from North Carolina State and a doctorate degree at the University of Tennessee. While conducting research at Northwestern University, he met fellow entomologist and future wife, Joan. They would later move to Vermont, where their children were born, then Colorado and finally Ohio. Tom spent his career furthering the study of fruitfly genetics and remains well known for having discovered a crucial gene that controls insect metamorphosis. His discovery has many ramifications, especially its usefulness for more efficient pest control. Additionally, he served his country in the Army Reserves, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. His beautiful butterfly collection pays homage to his tremendous intellectual curiosity and drive; Tom also collected stamps and military memorabilia. He enjoyed exploring the natural world, traveling to locations ranging from Scotland to Australia, and leading his son's Boy Scout troop on excursions in Alaska, the Rocky Mountains, and the Black Hills. He will be remembered for his inexorably corny sense of humor, his compelling stories, his warmth and generosity, his delicious pizza, and his ever-present mustache. We would like to thank all friends and family who helped to care for Tom towards the end of his life, and are especially grateful to the amazing staff at Sunrise of Worthington. Services remembering his life will be held at the Schoedinger Worthington Chapel on 6699 North High Street, Worthington, OH 43085, on Saturday, September 23rd at 4 p.m. with visitation commencing at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Tom's memory may be made to the at 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601 and alz.org or The Nature Conservancy at 4245 North Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203-1606 and nature.org.
