Virginia (Hand) Baumer Obituary
Baumer Virginia (Hand) Baumer, passed away on April 2, 2017 at the Burkhart Assisted Living Center of First Community Village in Columbus, Ohio. She was born in Canton, Ohio on October 19, 1925; the third child of Owen and Catherine Hand. Upon graduating from Timken High school in 1943, she enrolled at Ohio State and began taking classes and working in the Department of Agriculture office. There she met a graduate student, Elmer Baumer. The two were a striking couple who would eventually marry, have five children and live together in marriage for 70 years. In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by sisters Patricia Krause, Mary Harvey, and brother Owen Hand. She is survived by her sister, Ann Evans of Massillon, Ohio; her children, David (Joan), Donald (Polly), Jane (Charles) Mawhirter, Gary (Connie) Baumer, and John (Kelly) Baumer; her grandchildren, Erik, Paul, Ben (Cory Mescon-Baumer), Maggie, Dennis (Katy Hogan), Sarah, Jack and Shane; and great granddaughters, Elizabeth, Alice, and Arlo. Married in 1946, Elmer and Virginia (known to most as Ginny) spent two very happy years in Cleveland before returning to Ohio State for Elmer to pursue his PHD. In 1949 she welcomed the birth of their first child - David. By the end of 1954, Don, Jane, and Gary had been born and the family settled in Upper Arlington. In 1964, youngest son John was born. From the 1950's through the 1980's she was a wife and mother in Upper Arlington who was active at St. Agatha, with her children's sports, Ohio State women's groups, and various bowling, bridge and social groups. Her favorite pastime was playing golf at the Ohio State golf course where she proudly held about an 18 handicap for countless years. Through the years, Ginny and Elmer were side by side: dance partners, bridge partners, golf companions, party hosts and Buckeye fans just to name a few. After retirement, they enjoyed spending the winters in Florida doing what they loved playing golf and enjoying the company of great friends and family. Always cheerful, Ginny would be the first to tell you that she was lucky to have been blessed with a good life. Her family invites those who wish to celebrate her life to remember her on Wednesday April 5 from 5-8 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road. Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, April 6, 2017 at St. Agatha Catholic Church, 1860 Northam Road. Private interment at Resurrection Cemetery on a later date. Contributions in Ginny's memory may be made to for Parkinson Research, P.O. Box 4777, New York, NY 10163-4777.
