William Adelbert "Del" Spalsbury

Obituary Condolences

Spalsbury William Adelbert "Del" Spalsbury, born November 5, 1926, passed away at 2:50 a.m., May 16, 2017 after battling pneumonia and other health complications brought on by advanced age. He was 90 years old. Del led a colorful life having been born and raised on Native (American) reservations in Kansas and North Carolina and living through The Great Depression, the youngest of five children. He served during WWII and Korea and worked afterwards exploring for oil in Venezuela, Costa Rica and West Texas. A stint as the editor of the Madison Press brought him and his family to London Ohio in 1966. Later in his career he was the editor of 2 newspapers and a periodical for the Department of Defense (while employed by Battelle Memorial Institute). He had a passion for music and toured with the "big bands" after WWII. He continued to play in swing and jazz groups all his life. He also sang in church choir and barbershop quartets, played in London community play orchestras and the Battelle orchestra. He was a graduate of the University of Kansas with a BS in Geology. He met his wife of 58 years, Billie, at KU through the music program (where he also played in the marching band). Del served his community through Lions Club, Mission Council at church and London Athletic Boosters, among other groups. He was also a gifted photographer. He is survived by his wife; daughter, Jill; sons, Eric (Mona) and Todd (Erin); granddaughters, Jessica, Alanna, and Paige; and grandsons, Nick and Hunter. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters and his son-in-law. A kinder, more interesting man you will never meet. We all will miss him. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church on June 3, 2017 at 1 p.m. in London, Ohio. SNYDER FUNERAL HOMES is honored to serve the Spalsbury family.
