Smith, William Richard "Dick"
1930 - 2017
William Richard "Dick" Smith, age 87, passed away Monday, September 18, 2017 at his home. He was born September 8, 1930 in Casa Grande, Arizona to the late William E. and Dorothy (Potts) Smith. He grew up in Sciotoville, Ohio, and attended Portsmouth East High School. He graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. After serving honorably in the U.S. Army, he worked for the Columbus Citizen-Journal and then the Charles E. Merrill Publishing Company as an illustrator and editor until 1974. At that time, he became a freelance artist/illustrator. For over 50 years, he was a devoted and active member of Epworth United Methodist Church. He was an avid Reds and Buckeyes fan who played baseball and then fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball in various leagues until age 70. Dick enjoyed collecting many items, including children's books, toys and coins. Most importantly, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather of two, who were the joy of his life. He is survived by wife of 33 years, Jean (Lunn) Smith; sons, Ric (Stacey) Smith and Slade Smith; beloved grandchildren, Dylan and Mason Smith; sister, Celita Clark; and many loving nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister Joan Martinez. Private family services will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Mt. Carmel Hospice, 1144 Dublin Road, Columbus, Ohio 43215. Arrangements entrusted to SCHOEDINGER NORTH CHAPEL, 5554 Karl Road. Visit www.schoedinger.com to view his guestbook.
