Daniel R. Francetic Obituary
Francetic Daniel R. Francetic, passed away on August 27, 2014. He was born on March 29, 1933 in Clairton, PA. He was preceded in death by his father Matthew Francetic, and mothers Elizabeth Gorgey Francetic and Mary Salopek Francetic and grandson Matthew Treneff. Survivors are his wife of 56 years, Shirley; daughters, Linda (Matt) Lepe of Madison, WI, Donna (Nick) Treneff of Pickerington, OH; and sons, Daniel G. of Buckeye, AZ, and Brian (Lisa) of Mayfield Heights, OH; and grandchildren, Jocelyn, Jack, Vincent, Danielle, Maria and Sophie; along with his brothers, Paul (Blanche) of Richfield, OH and David of Phoenix, AZ; and many nieces and nephews. Daniel was a graduate of McKeesport Tech High School in 1951, Duquesne University in 1958 and received an MA from Case Western Reserve University in 1968. He taught for 40 years, first in Pennsylvania at Glassport High School from 1958 to 1962 and then in Ohio at Euclid High School from 1962 to 1998 where he was a planetarium/ astronomy teacher for 28 years. He was a consulting teacher for Project STAR at the Center for Astrophysics at Harvard University 1987-1990, a co-recipient of a grant from the National Science Teachers Association/ Toyota Award in 1994, a recipient of the Brennan Award from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific in 1996 for outstanding contributions to the teaching of astronomy in grades 9-12, he was one of four finalists for 1997 Ohio Teacher of the Year, and served as a past president of the Great Lakes Planetarium Association from which he received numerous awards. He had many fond memories of former students, fellow teachers, and fellow planetarians. Dan lived a full and happy life. He enjoyed his family, was an avid runner and fly fisherman, an oil painter, and enjoyed reading and traveling. His ashes will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Cemetery in Lockbourne, OH at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the .
