Marjorie Cribb Obituary

Cribb, Marjorie
Marjorie "Jerrie" Byam Cribb, age 96, of Columbus, Ohio, died November 11, 2020 at home with her family following a long and wonderful life. She was born on November 10, 1924 in Sharon, Massachussetts, the daughter of Seward G. and Marjorie C. Byam. On April 25, 1945 she married Thomas P. Cribb. Survivors include sons, David B. (Michelle) Cribb and John T. (Lissa) Cribb; grandchildren, Noelani (Mary) Scotton, John Thomas (Holly) Cribb, SunHye Cribb, Anne (Chad) Cribb, Adam D. (Missy) Cribb; and great grandchildren, Gabriel Scotton, Mason D. Cribb and Aiden T. Cribb. She was preceded in death by her best friend and loving husband Tom, and her oldest son Tom II. Jerrie graduated from Brown University (Pembroke) with degrees in German and Music, and was the youngest May Queen in Brown's history at age 17. Immediately following graduation she enlisted in the Women's Air Corps (1944-46) the forerunner of the Air Force, and held the rank of corporal. While working in an airbase office complex she met Tom Cribb, a sergeant in the Army Air Corps. Tom and Jerrie were married in 1945 during WWII. She was a cellist in the Columbus Symphony for eleven years and a cello teacher for over 60 years. She taught her last cello lesson at 95 years old. She was part of the Columbus Cellos, Divertimenti Trio and Women in Music, and performed in trios and quartets in hundreds of central Ohio venues and events. Jerrie created the position of Music Specialist for Franklin County with a mission of using music as therapy for special needs children and adults. This new (at the time) approach was very successful and groundbreaking at Orient, the State Hospital, and other mental health facilities. She was a longtime choir member and one of the vestry at St. Stephens Episcopal Church. Jerrie was also a member of the Kirche Trio Therapy Group and the "Dames" singing group. She lived at home, on her own, and was very much in control of her destiny all her life. She died at home on her terms, and showed family and friends the way to finish life with dignity. In Jerrie's own words: "I have had a life full of joy, an incredibly loving family and amazingly helpful friends. I go in peace." In lieu of flowers, Jerrie would welcome donations to Planned Parenthood and St. Stephens Episcopal Church.

Ms. Cribb had taught me for over 5 years although it definitely felt like more. I cannot imagine another teacher as kind, as caring, and as nurturing as she was. What first started as a chore became a passion of mine and there is no one else I can say that helped change my opinion on playing the cello than her. There are so many fond memories I have of going to her house and bonding about whatever had managed to become the topic of the day. I wish there were words to describe how amazing of a person she really was. I miss her so much and I want to thank her for being such a positive influence on my life.

Jerrie was so kind to me and my wife when we came to St. Stephen's as newcomers. She was a delight in Book Club, hosting meetings through 2019 and attending 2020 meetings via Zoom until a couple of months ago. She graciously cared for my dog last Thanksgiving so I could travel with family. That is when I first learned she was 95. I was so surprised. Jerrie was so full of life I would never have guessed.

Mrs. Cribb was my daughter's cello teacher for several years. I remember dropping my daughter off and Cocoa the dog would meet her at the door and take a nap during her lesson. Jerrie was a true teacher dedicated to sharing her love of music with students. She had a real zest not only for music but life in general.

Jerrie was my close friend for over 60 years. When our children were really young we would all get together at Tom and Jerrie's every Saturday night and share dinner with a bottle of bourbon between us --- while the kids played upstairs! Jerrie loved to entertain ---- loved to cook ----- so hospitable. I remember so many wonderful dinner parties at their house. She was a loving---determined----extremely hospitable --- talented woman. She was my role model. Although I have moved far away --- I will miss her essence. She is irreplaceable!

My mom, Harriet Green, played chamber music with Jerrie all over Columbus for many years. Jerrie is pictured with Harriet (seated at the piano) and violinist Mary Ellen Huff. This is one of my favorite photos, and brings back many memories.

Jerrie will be missed by all. She was a vibrant, loving and talented person who treasured her time with all of her musical colleagues. I was uplifted by her joy and energy. What a loss!
Jerrie, let our love and gratitude surround you as you rest in peace.

Jerrie was a wonderful person as well as musician. I’ve known her for the more than 50 years I’ve been a member of Women in Music-Columbus. She was the ultimate volunteer and if she said she would do something for someone, you could rest assured it would be done! With tears in my eyes I’ll say goodbye to a real lady.

Jerrie was a wonderful member of our tour group to Bulgaria and Meteora, Greece. I will always think of Jerrie with the warmth and love she shares.
