Murfreesboro - Captain William Oscar Pointer, USAF Retired, age 102 passed away at Adams Place. He was a native of Anderson County, born in Clinton, TN on February 2, 1916. He was the son of the late Isiac "Ike" Pointer and Bertha "Byrd" Pointer. He was preceded in death by his wives, Matilda McKee Pointer and Major Dorothy Laura Myering Pointer. Five siblings preceded him in death, Marie, Lorene, Lucille, Fletcher and Cleve.

He is survived by a son, William M. Pointer and wife Barbara of Ocala, FL; granddaughters, Debra Sue Pointer Johnson of Colorado Springs and Lisa Ann Pointer of Denver, CO; three great-granddaughters, Erika Ann Katlin, Sue Johnson and Kristina Sue Johnson of Colorado Springs; and one brother, James L. Pointer of Knoxville, TN.

Captain Pointer was a graduate of the former Glen Alpine High School and Lincoln Memorial University (1936). He taught school four years in the Anderson County School System. He joined the US Air Force in 1940. He served in the 8th Air Force in England, France and Germany during World War II. He also served in Japan and the Korean Conflict. He received 22 awards and decorations, citations and commendations including the Korean Presidential and Belgian Credit Degree.

After his retirement from the Air Force he became a successful Tennessee Walking Horse Breeder at Horse Haven in Rutherford County. He developed a reputation as one of the best Tennessee Walking Horse breeders in the industry.

He requests special recognition be made of the care he received while living at Stones River Manor. He wishes to acknowledge Mike Gann and Kathy Riley who went beyond the call of duty to assist him while living at Stones River Manor.

For the past several years he has been a resident of Adams Place Nursing Home. He has had numerous sitters at Adams Place, but he wishes to acknowledge Tammy Adams who provided special care and concern.

There will be an acknowledgement of his life at 1:00-3:00 PM, Wednesday, June 13, 2018 followed by a chapel service at 3:00 PM at Jennings and Ayers Funeral Home with Mike Gann officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens with military honors. He has no local family, but friends request all Veterans honor his service by coming by the Funeral Home and registering.

The greatest generation is fading away day by day.
