Loyal L. Johnson Obituary
DODGE CITY – Loyal L. Johnson, 89, died July 8, 2018 at Brookdale Senior Living in Dodge City. He was born on April 18, 1929 in Pratt, the son of Harry R. and Estelle (Frazee) Johnson.
Loyal moved with his family around central Kansas. He graduated from Belpre High School. Loyal then came to Dodge City to attend Dodge City Community College. While attending school, he met Wanda Louise Hoadley. They were married on August 21, 1949 at the First Christian Church in Dodge City.
Loyal started teaching at Lewis in 1948 while completing his bachelor's degree from Fort Hays State University. The couple then moved to Dodge City where Loyal taught fifth grade at Sunnyside Elementary School for 12 years. He finished his Master's degree in administration from Fort Hays and moved up to be Sunnyside's principal for 12 years. His last move in USD 443 was to assistant superintendant in 1972, where he served until his retirement in 1993. Loyal was an avid gardener. People would come to the farmers market looking for his fresh tomatoes.
He was a member of the First Christian Church of Dodge City where he served as an Elder for many years and actively served on many boards and committees.
Loyal is survived by three sons, Lynn Johnson of Waynesville, Missouri, David Johnson and wife Sharyl of Dodge City, Kansas, and Kevin Johnson and wife Robin of Gentry, Arkansas; one daughter, Marsha Shultz and husband Barry of Lansing, Kansas; one brother, Dean Johnson and wife Arlene of Wichita, Kansas; one sister, Judy Clothier and husband Gary of Pittsburg, Kansas; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Wanda; two sisters, Yvonne Stivers and Lois Duncan; and one daughter-in-law, Lana Johnson.
Funeral service will be held at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Dodge City, on Friday July 13, 2018 at 10:00 AM with Pastor David Johnson presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Chapel on Thursday July 12, 2018 from noon to 8:00 PM. Memorials are suggested to Cimarron Christian Church or First Christian Church of Dodge City both in care of the funeral home.
