George L. Gay

George L. Gay, 92, of Sturgeon Bay passed away on June 26, 2013, at Ministry Door County Medical Center. He was born August 15, 1920, in Richmond, Virginia to John and Lillian (Guthrie) Gay. George enlisted in the US Navy in August 1940. He proudly served in World War II, as a chief engineer, deep sea salvage and rescue diver and instructor, on the Battleship Mississippi, Carrier USS Essex and other submarine rescue vessels. In the Korean War, he was stationed in Formosa, and during the Vietnam War he served in Vietnam on many still classified missions with a rank of Chief Warrant Officer Grade 3. In 1963, he was seriously injured in the line of duty and received an honorable medical retirement. He then began civil service as the US Navy Supervisor of Ship Building (SupShip9) as a Contract Negotiator, Quality Control/Quality Assurance, and Security Officer. He retired in 1978.

He was very proud of his adult, lifelong participation in the Free and Accepted Masons. He was a Past Worshipful Master at the Henry S. Baird Masonic Lodge. He was also a Past Patron of Honor Chapter #1 of the Eastern Star. He was active member of the United Methodist Church. His civic duties included serving on the tax assessment board, election poll supervisor, Red Cross board, American Heart Association, and various other organizations. George married Evelyn Farschman, his next door neighbor and childhood friend, on January 28, 1944 in Lorain, Ohio. They celebrated 69 years of marriage this year.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn, 3 sons, George (Brian) Gay M.D., Cambridge; John Gay, Sturgeon Bay; and David (Ellen) Gay, Waukesha; 3 grandchildren, Richard (Melanie), Robert (Melissa), and Hannah. He was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, two brothers, John and James (Buck) and their wives, and a daughter-in-law, Susan.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Saturday, June 29, 2013, at the Sturgeon Bay United Methodist Church. Burial with military honors will be conducted at Hainesville Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday, June 28, from 4-8 p.m. at the Forbes Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay and at the church on Saturday from 10:00 am until the time of service.
