Carl (Buck) Eckert Obituary
Eckert, Carl J. (Buck)

Carl J. (Buck) Eckert, 93, of Fish Creek, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, September 26, in his Fish Creek home.

He was born on April 14, 1920 in Fish Creek, to Henry and Bertha (Seiler) Eckert and was the third generation of his family to be born here. He grew up with his brother, Henry (Hank) Eckert and sisters, Evelyn Schoeneich and Lucille (Odoo) Stadler, who preceded him in death. Buck served his country during WWII and was stationed in Northern Italy and Africa in the United States Army.

In 1949, Buck married Joan Verhasselt from Wrightstown, WI. They lived a wonderful life together for 64 years. As their family grew, Buck and Joan moved to Milwaukee for employment opportunities and lived there for 37 years. They always kept their home in Door County planning to return someday. Buck loved his Fish Creek home that he built by harvesting trees from his Chambers Island property and hauling them across the ice in the winter.

Buck was a wonderful father and enjoyed raising his five children that he loved. The joy kept coming with 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. For 30 years he supported his two son's stock car racing across WI. He loved to work the woods - planting and harvesting trees, deer hunting, gardening, exploring nature, boating and fishing the waters of Door. On his 90th birthday he was thrilled to go on the Old Glory Honor Flight. Buck was active with the Peninsula Park Nature Center and Gibraltar Historical Society giving talks and recording history. Being a third generation Fish Creek local, he knew it well. Buck spoke volumes. He always said "when an old timer goes, it's like a library burning down".

Buck is survived by four of his children, Wesley (Sandra) Eckert, Franklin, WI; Deborah (Jerry Butzen) Eckert, Ephraim; Mark (Linda) Eckert, Waukesha, WI; Carla (Jay) Marr, Fish Creek. His son, Bruce (Laurie) Eckert, preceded him in death. His nine grandchildren, John Eckert, Nick Gustafson, Danielle Eckert, Kelsey Eckert, Wes Eckert, Lindsay Eckert, Dan Eckert, Merci Arno, Leah Warpinski and three great-grandchildren.

There will be a military honors service at Blossomburg Cemetery in Peninsula Park on Saturday, October 26, at 11:00 AM. A celebration of his life will be held at the Log Den, 6626 Highway 42, Egg Harbor at noon. Memorials in his honor may be made to the Gibraltar First Responders or the Gibraltar Historical Association. Online registration and condolences available at
