Suzanne Larson Obituary

Dr Suzanne Larson

Cedar City - Suzanne was born in Preston, Idaho, to Stanford S. and June Call Larson. She grew up in Preston, Idaho and Brigham City, Utah. Sue received her B.A. in Communication from Utah State University, her M.A. from Western Washington University and her Ph.D. from the University of Oregon. She was an Oregon Duck fan from that point on.

Sue began her career as the forensic coach at Humboldt State University and then moved to Southern Utah University (SUU). She later became a professor in the Communication Dept. at SUU, serving as the Graduate Co-ordinator, Faculty Senate President, and acting chair, among other responsibilities. For many years, she was involved in summer programs hosted at Yale and Stanford Universities.

Sue's love of sewing and needlecrafts dated back to her early years when she entered a Sew with Wool competition. She was a passionate quilter with an impressive stash and a member of the local quilt guild. Her Brazilian embroidery was exquisite as was her needlepoint.

Family was very important to Suzanne. She adored her nieces and nephews, and then her great nieces and nephews as they came along. She often traveled to visit family or traveled with family.

Sue was cheerful even when ill. During her recent stay at Dixie Regional Hospital, a nurse recalled the interesting talks she had with Sue 2 years ago when Sue was recovering from neck surgery. She was always happy to see visitors and family.

Sue was predeceased by her parents, and her youngest brother, Gerald Call Larson, and her sister-in-law, Susan Christianson Larson. She is survived by her brothers, James Alma Larson (Carol), Stanford Dean Larson (Marilyn), Brent Call Larson, and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Reese Larson, as well as her 9 nieces and nephews, and 10 great-nieces and great-nephews.

There will be a graveside service on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 10:00 am at the Preston Cemetery in Preston, Idaho. Interment will be under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary. Online condolences can be sent at www.sumortuary.com.

Not sure what to say?

I have recently gone back to school and I am working towards a Masters in Mental Health Counseling. Through my studies I have been reminded of my time in undergraduate studies at SUU. I looked up my favorite professor and was sad to find she passed away a few years back. Suzanne was one of my greatest supporters and was instrumental in helping me decide a career path that would best suit me. I have many fond memories of her, I am grateful for her influence in my life. She pushed me to ask questions and be deliberate in my studies and in life. Rest in peace Professor Larson you are missed.

Suzanne...was the first to purchase a lot here in Flying L Ranches from Darwin and I. She said she found a piece of heaven here and we welcomed her with open arms. "Now don't be alarmed if you see a light on in my house at 3 am," she said, as when she could not sleep, she would get up and sew. Sew she did. . . alot. Look at that smile. She was always cheerful. Rest in peace dear friend.

This sweet lady was my boss for two years at SUU and I just loved her! She taught me a lot about being authentic and having dreams. She was genuine and spunky.

Suzanne, as she was affectionately called by all of her students, was amazing. She is the reason I decided to switch my major to communication at SUU. I still remember enrolling in her Persuasion class and absolutely falling in love with the field of study. She was a wonderful professor and would lead the most interesting and thought provoking classroom discussions I have ever experienced. She created an environment where I felt safe to share my ideas and add to the discussion, and she truly valued the input of each member of her class. Plus, she was good friend and I felt she was genuinely interested in me. I have so many wonderful and fun memories of Suzanne, and she is a professor I will never forget. My condolences to the entire Larson family.
