Barbara Lou Cockerton Obituary
Barbara Lou Cockerton
Jan. 7, 1935 - Aug. 27, 2018
Resident of Walnut Creek
Barbara Lou Cockerton of Walnut Creek passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family Monday, August 27th. She was born 83 years ago on January 7, 1935, in Oakland to George and Lorine King. She resided in Oakland until her senior year of high school when the family moved to Orinda. After graduating from Holy Names College in 1956, she began her teaching career. Two years later, Barbara met and married Coach George R. Cockerton and settled in Alamo. Married 56 years, they raised sons Matthew, Michael, Richard and daughter, Margaret. Barbara cherished her years as a stay at home mom caring for her own little ones often recounting those were her most fulfilling and treasured years. When her children were grown, she returned to teaching for the San Ramon Unified School District. Joyfully, she spent the last several years of her 26 year teaching career at Alamo Elementary School loved by students, parents and colleagues alike. There wasn't anything more captivating than listening to one of Mrs. C.'s infamous stories whether sitting in her classroom, catching your breath in the teachers' room or relaxing across the dining room table. Barbara retired in June of 2007 but remained devoted to family members, friends and her community. With great confidence and sincerity, she was quick to offer a prayer for anyone, anytime.
Barbara was predeceased by her husband in 2014, and is survived by son Matthew, grandchildren Ryan and Cori; son Michael; daughter Margaret Lowell, husband Paul James and granddaughter Melissa and husband James Reavis; son Richard, wife Julie and granddaughter Kate; her loving twin brother Bob, wife Lorraine; and countless old and new friends, neighbors and many of her past students. Remembering Barbara's optimistic outlook on life, her diverse sense of humor, always her kindness, that fanatic passion for college or high school football, her love of baseball and her many zany, hilarious stories will keep her with us always.
The Cockerton family would like to thank the many faithful, thoughtful friends and neighbors who supported Barbara so tirelessly with their affection and many kind deeds. The family also wishes to recognize the wonderful, caring staff at DaVita Walnut Creek Dialysis Center, caring staff at Better Days Care Provider, Kaiser Walnut Creek's doctors, nurses, Oncology, Infusion and Renal Support groups and Kaiser Oakland for the years of service and devotion given her. Thank you to Hospice, Kaiser, for their support and guidance.
The family invites you to join with them in the celebration of Barbara's life at her memorial service to be held at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Danville on Thursday, September 6, 2018, at 10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a charitable contribution be made in Barbara's name to an organization of choice, or donate at kidney.org or .
