Resident of Hayward, CA
Bernadette Lorraine Alves Correia, long time resident of Hayward, passed away on January 9th, 2021 at the age of 90. The youngest of two children, she was born to immigrant parents from the Azores.
Bernie, as she was known to her friends, graduated from Hayward High in 1949 and in April 1950, she married Clarence Correia. They raised their family in Hayward and enjoyed 51 years together prior to Clarence's passing in 2001.
Bernie lived a full life. She was an artist and belonged to a tole painting group. She also took classes and learned how to make porcelain dolls which she did for 20 years. Bernie liked to sew and she enjoyed meeting new people by attending teas, luncheons, and cultural events.
Bernie was proud of her Portuguese heritage, and she started her own family tradition of making Filhos (Portuguese doughnuts) and Portuguese sweet bread. During the Lenten season, her kitchen was transformed into a makeshift bakery and the doughnuts and breads made there were shared with family, friends, and neighbors.
Wherever Bernie went, she left her mark by making any situation better by using her creativity to invite people into a solution. She was involved with PTA and was a Brownie Troop leader. She worked as a classroom aid at John Muir, and later managed the Gift Wrap Department at Liberty House in Southland Mall. Bernie was often the organizing force behind the Neighborhood Watch Night Out block parties. She retired from Food Services working for Hayward Unified School District.
Bernie is survived by her sister Marie; 4 children Brad (Randi), Karen, David, Janet (Michael); grandchildren Chris (Arla), Ashley (Ryan), Allison, Kevin, Jeremy, Erik, Peter, Abby, Ben and 6 great-grandchildren. Her creative and youthful spirit, wise counsel and thoughtfulness will be missed by all who had the honor of working with and knowing her. May she rest in peace in heavenly paradise with family and friends who have preceded her in death.
Service will be private due to COVID. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
