Charles Judd Obituary
CHARLES LEVI JUDD Born January 3, 1917, in Everett, Massachusetts, Charlie Judd died of natural causes Sunday morning July 23, 2006 at home surrounded by his family. Charlie attended Everett High School, Phillips Exeter Academy and the University of New Hampshire, where he majored in psychology. During his senior year, Charlie was captain of the University of New Hampshire's undefeated football team. He then attended graduate school at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania where he met and married Helen Elisabeth Kelley of Council Grove, Kansas. Charlie and Helen completed Master's degrees in Social Work. Charlie worked at Mission Community Center in San Francisco with disadvantaged and minority youths. The Judds built a home in Belmont, California and Charlie took a job teaching English and Social Studies at Borel Junior High School in San Mateo. When he transferred to Sequoia High School in Redwood City, he joked that it only took him 14 years to graduate from junior high. He taught English until he moved full time into the Guidance and Counseling Office. Throughout his teaching career, Charlie coached football, basketball, and baseball. The Judds were interested in international relations and two exchange students lived with the family for a year each and attended Carlmont High School in Belmont - Gloria Austin from Barbados and Femida Handy from India. In 1975 Charlie and Helen moved to Council Grove, Kansas, where they owned and operated the Hays House restaurant - the oldest continuously operating restaurant west of the Mississippi - for 14 years. During that time, they completely renovated the building and it was designated a National Historic Landmark. Charlie and Helen loved traveling to exotic places and meeting local people. Among their favorite places were Japan, Indonesia, Komodo Island, the Arctic and Antarctic, Argentina, Botswana, Egypt, Australia, and Yemen. They have traveled to all 50 states and all seven continents. Charlie is survived by his wife, Helen Judd of Council Grove, KS, and four children: Carolyn Judd Felton of Charlotte, NC; Kathryn Judd Kurtz of Hillsboro, OR; Martha Judd Aggazzotti of Newberry Park, CA; and Kelley Charles Judd of Palm Desert, CA. Also by grandchildren Ryan Marsh, Todd Marsh, Cristina Aggazzotti, Andrew Felton and Julia Felton. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice, Morris County Historical Society, or the Council Grove Bowers Community Center. Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home (620)767-7877
