Edna Bireley Chance
August 30, 1917 - February 13, 2017
Resident of Livermore
Edna Bireley Chance was born in Wray Colorado on August 30, 1917. She was the second oldest of 4 children of Ruby and William Bireley. Edna and family moved to Livermore arriving at the Livermore Train Depot, her first memory of Livermore in 1929. The population of Livermore was 2,500 when the Bireley's arrived. Their family immediately joined Asbury Methodist Church on South I Street in downtown Livermore. She often said leaving the snow in Colorado and seeing the California flowers and green hills and California oranges was a wonderful first expxerience. She attended Fifth street school and graduated from LHS in 1935. This past Sept. the LHS Alumni Committee recognized her at this years homecoming as honorary Homecoming Queen. She worked in Livermore as a florist and at the Golden Rule Creamery as a young woman.
Edna met Eldred Chance at Asbury Methodist Church and they were married June ll, 1938. During WWII she and Eldred worked in the Richmond shipyards until he joined the Air Force. He trained and became a B-24 Bomber pilot. Janet was born while Eldred was in Italy. Their son, Tom, was born 6 years later at St. Paul's hospital in Livermore. She always felt that the birth of her two children, and the return home of her husband after the war, were the most memorable events of her life.
Community service was always important to Edna and she spent over 32 years as a member of the Valley Care Memorial Auxillary as a cashier in the thrift shop. She is survived by son, Tom Chance (Cheryl); daughter, Janet Buckley (Richard); Grandsons: Christopher Buckley, Timothy Buckley, Peter Buckley, Ryan Chance and Daniel Chance. One Granddaughter: Amanda Chance Sears; 11 great grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church in Livermore at l:00pm - Friday Feb 24th. Reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall.
