James G Dignan, Jr.
January 22, 1943 - January 2, 2021
Resident of Pleasanton
James (Jerry) G Dignan Jr passed away peacefully on January 2, 2021. Jerry was born on January 22, 1943 to James G and Marie Dignan while they were stationed with the Army in Bayonne, New Jersey. The family returned to Oakland, California and eventually moved to live in a home on the grounds of the Alameda County Santa Rita Jail property and later Staples Ranch. Jerry enjoyed the many playmates and friends among the families of the other Deputy Sheriffs residing there.
Jerry attended St. Michael Catholic School in Livermore and Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton. He was very active in sports throughout his youth, and played varsity baseball, basketball, football and swimming in high school. While attending Oakland City College Jerry was a member of the track team. He was a fan of the Oakland A's and Oakland Raiders. Jerry was very involved in the Pleasanton SLO Pitch League both as a player and a coach. He also was influential in the development of baseball parks. Jerry worked for the city of Pleasanton in the Public Works Dept. for over 30 years working on many major projects such as the Hacienda Business Park.
Jerry enjoyed hunting and fishing from a early age. He would hunt in local fields and on trips with his friends and bring home pheasants and quail for family dinners. Jerry enjoyed the dogs he raised, Flicka, his hunting dog, and Patches who didn't like loud noises. He loved camping at Donner Lake with his family and enjoyed his many trips to Lake Tahoe. After raising his family in Castro Valley, Jerry was happy to return to Pleasanton and reunite with many of his friends on his daily walks around downtown.
Jerry was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Patricia Christman. He is survived by his sisters Madeline Deaton (Myrkle), Theresa Thut (Michael), Jeanette Murff (Richert); daughters Melinda Nannini (Robert), Julie Hoyt; grandchildren Michael Nannini (Katie), Christopher Nannini (Sarah), Isabella Nannini, Kayla Hoyt, and ex-wife Phyllis Dignan.
The family wishes to express a special thank you to Jerry's "Best Buddy", Alex Saporsantos, for the devoted care, FaceTime calls, special friendship and sense of humor in keeping Jerry smiling and happy while a resident of Sunol Creek Memory Care.
There was a private burial. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled later in the year. In his memory, a donation to the Museum on Main, 603 Main Street, Pleasanton CA 94566 would be appreciated.
