Joseph Michael McFarlan Obituary
Joseph Michael McFarlan
July 29, 1947 - September 15, 2018
Resident of Cedarville, CA
Joseph Michael McFarlan died unexpectedly on September 15, 2018.
Mike, as he was called by family, was born in Antioch and was a member of the first graduating class of Holy Rosary Catholic School. After graduating from Humboldt State, Mike spent two years in the Peace Corps in India as a geologist, locating fresh water wells for small villages. He also worked on a gold mine in Australia. These experiences fostered a life long passion for world travel.
Mike's career as a geologist for the Bureau of Land Management took him to Cedarville, California, where he met his wife, Lauren. They were married in 1977. Together, Mike and Lauren traveled the world, often working their way with Habitat for Humanity.
In retirement, Mike developed a passion and talent for wood working. He loved sharing his work in gifts of his unique handcrafted pieces. Mike was an avid hunter, skills learned as a young boy on those family treks into the wilderness, led by his father. Mike was also a member of the Parish Council at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Mike was quite a character... an old soul, with many talents and interests. One of those was his love of wine. He enjoyed learning everything about grapes and winemaking, but mostly, he loved drinking his red wine, and gathering his family at his home for lively biennial family reunions.
Mike is survived by his wife, Lauren, his father, Joseph, and his siblings, Pat Biteman, Teresa Stone, Dennis McFarlan and Larry McFarlan, and his very dearest, Sonam. He was preceded in death, by his mother, Minnie.
Services will be held at St. James Catholic Church in Cedarville on 9/28.
In lieu of flowers, please donate in Mike's name to Habitat for Humanity.
