Wilmot Hess Obituary

WILMOT "BILL" N. HESS October 16, 1927 - April 16, 2004 Died at his home in Berkeley of Leukemia. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Winifred "Westher" Lowdermilk Hess, son, Carl E. Hess, daughter, Alison L. Williams, and four grandchildren, as well as three nephews and two nieces. A son, Walter Craig, predeceased him. Bill received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, worked at both the Lawrence Berkeley and Lawrence Livermore laboratories, then became head of theoretical Physics at Goddard Space Center in MD; Director of Science and Applications at the Manned Space Center in Houston for Apollo 11, Director of the Research laboratories of NOAA in Boulder, CO, Director of the Nat'l Center of Atmospheric Research, and finally Assoc. Director of High Energy and Nuclear Physics for the U.S. Dept. of Energy in MD. He retired to Berkeley in 1996. In latter days he became an avid birdwatcher and enjoyed travelling extensively. In Colorado he enjoyed skiing. and he always loved vacationing at his summer home in Maine. The memorial service will be private.
