Michael Oliver Varner
April 18, 1941 - August 26, 2016
Resident of Walnut Creek
Mike passed away on Friday at John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek, surrounded by his loving family at his side. Mike was born in Los Angeles to parents, Doyle and Ann (Wilson) Varner, but spent the majority of his childhood growing up in San Luis Obispo where he graduated from San Luis High School in 1959. Michael attended Cal Poly, earning his B.A. in Environmental Engineering in 1963, the same year he married his wife, Sharon (Pennington) Varner, with whom he celebrated 53 years of marriage. Mike was awarded a fellowship and furthered his studies at Harvard where he graduated with his Master's Degree in 1965.
Mike had a respected and distinguished career as an engineer, living and working in several cities throughout his profession, some of which included:  the University of Washington in Seattle, WA,  Lawrence Radiation Labs in Livermore, CA, Lockheed Martin in San Jose, CA and ASARCO in Salt Lake City, Utah later becoming a Vice President of ASARCO in New York City, while residing in Scotch Plains, New Jersey.
Mike was the star quarterback of his high school football team. He was an avid sports enthusiast, playing baseball and football in his younger years and later enjoying snow skiing and water skiing outings together with his family and friends. He was especially fond of watching college football or San Francisco Giants games with a big bowl of popcorn in hand. Mike enjoyed traveling, amusing his grandchildren and appreciated a fine bottle of wine or scotch. Mike had a wonderful voice and was an active member of his SIR singing group. He was an ardent book-reader, was always quick with a joke, and loved telling stories. A devoted family man and friend, his appreciative company and clever insight will be greatly missed.
Mike is survived by his wife, Sharon, their three children, Jeffrey (Linda), Ron (Cassandra), and Kristin (Michael), five grandchildren, Lexie, Kaylie, Gianna, Dominic and Francis, as well as his two brothers, Bruce and Ronald.
