Helen Madelyn Sullivan, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away on February 2, 2017. Helen was born on November 7, 1932, in Dallas, Texas. She and her husband, Eli Sullivan Jr., came to Oakland, California in 1956. Of this union six children were born; Stan, Hazel, Larry, Denise, Judieth and Naqqajj.
Helen was a teacher for the Oakland Unified School District for over 30 years, teaching at various schools throughout her career until her retirement. Helen continued to teach for several years after retirement, filling in as a substitute teacher.
Helen graduated from Holy Names College with a B. A. Degree in Social Science; Cal State University with a M. S. Degree in School Supervision/Administration. Helen was also a member of the Pi Gamma Mu National Social Science Honor Society Phi Delta Kappa.
Helen loved playing and teaching piano, and played for a number of church choirs. Helen truly loved Gospel Music and believed that, "Music gives passions to a soul, wings to the mind, creativity to the imagination, and life to the Spirit."
Helen loved traveling, both domestic and abroad. She loved visiting museums, art galleries, theaters and musicals. Helen also enjoyed her travels to Japan, China, Hawaii, France and Greece.
Helen was a member of the National Council of Negro Women; the California Retired Teacher's Assoc.; Church Women United; the East/West/North Oakland Senior Citizens Centers; Gladys Williams Circle; and the Allen Temple Baptist Church Book Club
Helen is the author of a Memoir, "Teaching In The Flatlands, A Three Decades Odyssey in Title 1 Schools."
Helen is survived by her 6 children; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and a host of extended families, friends, and church members. Helen will be truly missed by everyone who knew and loved her.
A Memorial Service will be held at Allen Temple Baptist Church in Oakland, CA, on February 21, 2017, at 11A.M. A private burial service will be held at Lone Tree Cemetery in Hayward, Ca.
