I met Lionel Gregory with his Comex 5 in Sept. 1972 when they crossed into Iran.
I was English, living in the Makoo Inn just over the Turkish / Iranian border and working for the Iranian National Tourist Organisation. It was a real priviledge to meet all the young people on that journey with him and to appreciate the ideals of Comex as they were welcomed into Iran. It was also good to be able to speak English as I felt homesick quite often.

I was a member of the Edinburgh contingent on Comex 3, and worked with Greg on the expedition magazine. His leadership, foresight, calm and steadfastness, often under considerable pressure, was formidable. What a man! Only sorry it has taken so long for me to find out about his demise.

Lionel Gregory was a good leader and a good man. His work and ideals become clearer to me over the years. A member of the Edinburgh contingent of Comex 2 (1967), I marvel at the places we visited that would be impossible to see now.

Friendship is much bigger than politics
"When all else fails friends somehow emerge, like the grace notes of life, and that, I believe, is what Heaven is all about."
